The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Yes, major profs exert undue power in dealing with grad students. What's the problem here? Are the major profs trying to exact from their grad students what got exacted from them when they were in grad school? Come on! Rather than putting grad students through hell, guide them, especially early on, and then as they settle into the research let them go and be on their own. I have a feeling that many major profs are egomaniacs and power hungry and love to use intimidation on grad students. I thought we were educators here.
