COLLOQUY Responses
|
|
David Holland is right but he should add cowardice to his list of reasons why faculty have abdicated all control over their own affairs. The culprit here is the constant abuse of the tenure system by senior faculty [amply documented in colloquy articles and responses] who prefer the adulation of toadies to the often rougher discourse dished out by those who actually feel secure about their talents and convictions. The result is a form of social Darwinism in which survival of the most cowardly is assured. This has been going on since the 1960s at least. By now the ranks of academia are so stripped of anyone with anything to say or the guts to say it that it hardly matters whether they show up for meetings.
