The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

Ms. Schneider's article on student behavior was most opportune, arriving on the day our Teaching/Learning center held a faculty program on the topic. We had surveyed the faculty to identify the behaviors of most concerned, then tried to identify solutions. In my college skills course, I spend a class on classroom protocol, emphasizing the two-way street of behaviors; and I include information in my syllabus.

Also suggested: enlist students to reinforce the notion that rude behavior irritates students as much or more than it does the instructor. We also see an increase or at least a perceived increase in many of the behaviors identified.
