The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

Like David J. Rothman, I was intrigued by Alison Schneider's reference to Foucault in the article. I'm always pleased when a journalist acknowledges of one of history's great physicists. Who can forget Foucault's innovative techniques in measuring the speed of light? Or his demonstration of the earth's rotation by means of a freely-suspended pendulum? Or his important contributions to telescopic optics?

One wonders what kind of a world this is when the mention of the name "Foucault" inspires some to think of "Michel" rather than "Jean."
