The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

While Microsoft may be the "industry standard," many of us feel the real issue is one of choice. For us, Windows is not a worthy operating system. Not only that, studies show that an all-Windows environment is 25% more costly to maintain than an all-Mac environment. Given that Macs are still easier to use, this cost benefit is an added bonus for consumers and tax-payers alike.

Furthermore, you may not have noticed that Apple is no longer quite the "struggling" company it was even two years ago. The company has recently launched its very successful line of G3 Macintosh computers and a powerful new notebook computer that blows the doors off Pentium-based PCs. Steven Jobs seems as if he'll stay on guiding the company indefinitely and that has been great for the company's bottom line and its stock prices.

Having Apple remain a competitive and viable company can only be good for consumers in the long run -- even if those consumers use MS Windows.
