The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

The overused argument for standardizing on one computing platform as a way to cut support costs and enjoy savings is only too readily embraced by institutions which face ongoing budgetary battles for precious funding. In the business world, where resources for supporting technology are much greater than in education, the savings from standardizing on the Wintel platform have simply not materialized as you might expect.

Furthermore, with the ever increasing acceptance and use of Internet standards as the way to connect and share information, it would be a shame to see higher education commit themselves to a path which can not deliver what it promises and may already be a moot point. Which operating system you choose to use will not matter, as long as you can connect to a Inter/Intranet network.

So use the computer and operating system which works the best for you, without having your choice mandated by anyone else.
