The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

The fashion sense, or lack thereof, of my professors from my undergraduate days made a huge impression. I later learned in graduate school that some of them had been tracking my fashion statements as well. I found it fascinating to watch both the fashion mavens and the oblivious and was equally enthralled by both approaches.

As for nominations for the best dressed, two men are clear winners in my book. Peter Awn, Professor of Religion and Dean of the School of General Studies at Columbia, is remarkably dressed daily. His attention to detail, including his accessories, is wonderful. I find it a pleasure to come to work and see what he's wearing. Frank Peters, Professor of Near Easter Studies at NYU, is also a contender. From his white linen suit to his new Hermes orange duffle coat, just freshly bought last week-end in Paris, Frank has been making a fashion statement I've appreciated since I was in his class as a sophomore in 1965! These men make two original fashion statements that defy categorization. They're not natty English, downtown black, tweedy American. You should see them for yourselves!
