If you would like to see academics who dress well, visit the foreign language department.

I do use Coach handbags because I was replacing cheaper handbags every 3 months. While I don't wear a suit every day, I do try and emulate what I consider only slightly more relaxed than professional attire in the business world. This does not have to be expensive if you shop at thrift and consignment stores. When I was in graduate school, I was disgusted by the attire of some of my professors in fields other than foreign languages. In fact, I was at the home of a foreign language professor and met her husband, a professor in a different field. He was so slovenly I mistook him for someone she paid to do her yard work! Let's grow up and dress as professionals. Having worked at Morehouse, Spelman and now Johnson C. Smith, I have seen college presidents who dress well and provide excellent role models to emulate in the academic and fashion areas. Let's face it, the way some professors dress is just a symptom of emotional immaturity.
