The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

It never crossed my mind about how much this debate matters until I was marked down on a performance evaluation for the way I dressed. The person who made the evaluation explained that my clothes did not reflect the proper demeanor for an academic librarian. My sin? I put a run in my last pair of nylons one day, and made the mistake of wearing socks with a skirt. It pained me to do it, but am I supposed to believe that I damaged my career because I had no pantyhose? Or was I supposed to be late for work, because I stopped to buy nylons?
