COLLOQUY Responses

Aside from really liking mathematics and the teaching of mathematics, one reason that I went into academia was that, upon acutely observing how my instructors dressed, I realized that I would seldom have to dress like a grownup. (I could only be young once, but I could be immature forever.) And that's still true after 25 years, even though the now middle-aged contours of my body have militated that I forgo jeans most of the time and go to Dockers. And, even when I do wear jeans, the students in the classroom, and I, know that there is a difference between us. Besides, it's hard to have good ideas. It's even harder if the blood supply to the brain is constricted by a tie and a buttoned collar.
