The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

Responses

I realize that a person's clothing makes a certain "statement" to others. Of all the previous responses I read to the "frump vs. chic" question, I agree most with Laura Rhoads. I am a microbiologist, and I wouldn't dare wear any valued clothing article to work. Between the permanent stains, caustic chemicals, bleach and microorganisms that may get spilled and require harsh treatment to remove, I could never afford to wear anything of real value into class!

Even though I may wear jeans and t-shirts (turtle neck in winter), I am always neat, clean, and professional in my demeanor. I do understand that different fields of study would require a different standard of dress, but it simply isn't practical in many scientific fields.
