COLLOQUY Responses

Fashion and being fashionable is part of the game of life. Wether you're an academic or a medic you send a signal by what you wear. I think the key is in being dressed appropriately for where ever you are and for whatever you are trying to accomplish. For me, here in rural (and beautiful) Vermont, I am considered to be one who dresses way and well above the norm of my colleagues. However, my students are out on the streets learning and polishing the skills to become broadcast journalists. They never know who they might interview on any given day, the Governor or just plain ol' people on the street. They must always look ready to meet the Governor. So, I try to set an example for them. It's dress shirts (mostly with monograms), expensive ties (which my brother donates to me and my male students from his NYC manufacturing company), POLO slacks (left over from a part time sales gig in Providence, RI) and Bass Weejun loafers, always (I got two pair for holiday gifts last month!). Find a style and stick with it, whatever works. Just don't try and dress like your students. Where do they find those get-ups?!?! Happy dressing.
