Maybe because of my South American heritage, I have always cared about my appearance. During my years as a graduate student, I always spent part of my very limited funds on new clothes, permanent waves, and cosmetics. What effect did it have? One young woman student told me I was the only English teacher she'd ever had who looked like a human being.
