
Some of us get paid for writing, you know. Some academics also rely on patents, performances, and art sales to supplement their salaries. We don't make anything like the salaries we could make in the private sector, but we do have the advantage that what we produce is ours.
Universities would love to change that, and Mr. Koonin's proposal looks a very good way to start that process. I realize that the library problem is real, but there must be other solutions.
