The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

A special package of stories in this week's Chronicle explores three instances in which students died from consuming too much alcohol. One story explores attempts to hold a university responsible for a student's death. The second story examines an attempt to take action against a bar. The third story looks at attempts to hold a fraternity responsible. In all three cases, those seeking to punish someone or some institution for the students' deaths have had difficulty. Many times, people say that the responsibility for drinking too much ultimately rests with the student who is doing the drinking. Should colleges, fraternities, and bars be held responsible for such deaths? Legally? Morally? What steps should be taken to prevent such tragedies?
