The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

I have been reading the debate on where to place the blame for alcohol-related deaths and injuries. As a student, I feel that I have a slightly different take on this issue. I agree with those who believe that we should not be pointing fingers and placing blame. The blame lies with all of us. Many students on university and college campuses drink and are going to drink. Some are more responsible than others. However, some do not know how to treat alcohol responsibly.

I feel that education is a key factor in the way students use and abuse alcohol. During orientation my first year in college, I was made aware of the dangers of alcohol abuse. However, I was also made aware of the backups and safety-nets in place should I choose to abuse alcohol, which I did. The administration has chosen to be supportive of students and to help educate them, as opposed to policing and punishing them. This has led to a more open atmosphere, in which there is discussion and dialogue allowing many view points to be represented.

Education, in this case as in most others, is the key.
