The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

I think the university that believes it can protect all students from the consequences of excessive use of alcohol/drugs is deceiving itself. We have preventive programs, warnings, and information about symptoms of alcohol poisoning, referrals for treatment, an alcohol-free campus, etc. Yet traditional college-age students have a tremendous ability to deny that anything bad could happen to them, personally. Any campus organization that promotes heavy drinking should be scrutinized by the university as to its cost versus benefits to students.
