The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY

THE RESPONSES
As a staff/administrative employee of eight years, I have seen that problems revolving around tenure cannot be prevented due to the process. Professors will behave admirably until tenure is granted. Then the student suffers as the professor exacts revenge on those who stung him or her along the way.

It really does seem that the tightening fiscal circumstances dictate that tenure be utilized only to retain the very top professors. The majority of professors should join the rank and file and work until they desire a change in vocation.
