Since I have followed the overall grade creep over the last 32 years, I believe that grade escalation is a major problem beginning in primary school and continues throughout the educational system. There has been a major shift in the grade policies around the country. The use of standardized, multiple choice exams tend to assist in promoting grade escalation since these questions, once skills are developed, are easier for the student to guess successfully without having any in depth knowledge of the subject area. In higher education, I would suggest that we abandon the multiple-choice format for exams and use other forms of student evaluation.
