Data released by the American Association of University Professors show that the average salary for full-time faculty members in 2001-2 rose to $62,895, a 3.8-percent increase. While the increase was well above the 1.6-percent inflation rate for that period, AAUP officials warn that this may be the last good news on faculty salaries for a while, and that the increases came before the economic downturn that has led to the elimination of some faculty jobs and to salary freezes at many institutions. Are faculty members adequately paid today? How is the economic downturn affecting faculty salaries? What can colleges do to better support their faculty members?
