An emerging type of course and program is blending distance education and traditional, classroom-based instruction. These "hybrid" courses and programs involve some face-to-face interaction, but they also make use of distance education for some courses and lectures. While the hybrid programs use the best of classroom and online education, they also challenge the assumptions held by proponents of both types of education by suggesting that either form, alone, may not be sufficient. How valuable are the emerging hybrid programs that blend distance education and classroom learning? What does this new type of education say about distance education and classroom-based instruction?
