Creative writing gives students a wonderful way to appreciate literature better. Having students to generate poems and fiction of their own helps them to understand the challenges of the creative process and would help students realize how much deliberation and revision actually goes into a serious work of art.
While students should learn how to analyze and evaluate the works of others, I think we miss a good opportunity to refine students' tastes and to teach literary appreciation by leaving students to their own devices when it comes to creativity.
