Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 has led to a huge expansion of athletics opportunities for women in college. Institutions have added teams, and thousands of scholarships have been created for women. But the cover article in the new issue of The Chronicle explores the way these opportunities have primarily gone to white women. Should colleges worry about the racial imbalances among female athletes, where black athletes play a major role on track and basketball teams but may be invisible elsewhere? What can colleges do about these imbalances?
