I have read all of the previous posts and I would like to say thank you. I would like to thank The Chronicle of Higher Education for publishing this article. I would like to thank all of the individuals that have posted responses.
I find it interesting that so many people from across the country seem to get it. They understand the issues at the heart of this debate. However, people in this state, community, and university just don't understand. There have been posts from UND alums that understand the issue, and others from those that don't, who interestingly refuse to offer their full names.
The issue is heating up once again with a peaceful protest over a week ago and the subsequent posting of flyers with racist remarks on the door of the building that houses the Indian Studies Program.
The racism on this campus and in this state, whether subversive or evident, must be combated. I will continue to fight against the nickname because I think it is the right thing to do. Thank you for the support given in these responses. It invigorates me to continue the campaign.
