The Sioux name was never officially sanctioned by any Indian tribe but was begun as a "cute" name to intimidate the Bison of UND's arch rival NDAC (now NDSU) of Fargo, ND. The shame really lies in the fact that many people, both white and Indian victims of the bloody Minnesota Uprisings which took place during the Civil War, were still alive when UND began the use of the name and image. Feel sorrow for the ignorance displayed by those who came before us; correct the error; move on. Both groups can then combine their energies to accomplish the purpose for which the university was established: Education.
