The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

While I am empathetic to the concerns of the protestors, I have yet to see what I would consider overwhelming and even relatively undivided support for a change within the American Indian community.

  1. I think the University and the fans have been very respectful of the nickname
  2. I fervently believe the Sioux people have larger issues to contend with
  3. I applaud the University's efforts to support American Indian culture via programs and classes. I took a class re: American Indian philosophy in the very early 70's that was extremely enlightening.
  4. The use of the nickname, given UND's ongoing excellence in athletics and the way in which the athletes conduct themselves casts only a positive light on the Sioux people.
