A growing number of colleges -- including more large universities than was previously the case -- are requiring all students to buy laptop computers. Supporters of the idea say that it encourages faculty members to invest the time and effort to come up with curricular ideas that use technology to advance instruction. Some academic administrators also believe that these requirements can allow colleges to save money since cuts can be made in support for campus computer labs. But critics point out that many courses at colleges that require laptops make little use of technology. And some question whether colleges are capable of making the initial investments necessary to buy laptops for low-income students and to train faculty members on how to make use of the machines. Should colleges require undergraduates to buy laptops? How can colleges that require laptops make the best use of them for undergraduates?
