It isn't about coffee alone. Students, especially those in the traditional 18-20-plus range are looking for a place that encourages not just reading but collaborative work. We find that by creating an attractive public area that we have a full house all day, every day. No coffee offered although the cafeteria is a minute away. Older students may be much happier researching from the privacy of home or office but even they want to have an attractive place to come to when they want. Think more about environment overall which leads to a positive experience (lessons from retail?) and your library will flourish in this new age.
