The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

Is a cat's life as valuable, worthy as a human life? Yes! So is a mollusk's and a mushroom's and a leaf of lettuce. All are living things. Does a cat or a mushroom or a leaf of lettuce feel? We can't know the answers to all these questions because we are limited in our capability to access information about other species as well as our own fellow humans. Do we have right to wantonly kill whatever our own individual ethics tell us is right? I don't think so. But we do have the power. And that's what so disturbing about Singer and his ilk. Their beliefs fit it with those in power and enable them to maim, murder, and oppress those like me and my brethren with disabilities who are not.
