Mr. Singer's reliance on the popular riddle is misplaced. He is generalizing from an unreal or at best extremely unusual example. His "tit for tat" conclusion places others largely in control of personal behavior and leads, I feel, to passive despair.
Much better to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It's an old principle, takes an active approach, suggests putting into action your internal values, will not win anyone accolades for new and creative thinking, but is extremely hard to improve on.
