The Chronicle of Higher Education: Colloquy

COLLOQUY
THE QUESTION
RESPONSES
BACKGROUND

It was once the case that it was pronounced with confidence that the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. That confidence has been shaken by the development of applied, medical, physical and social sciences. Fin de siecle thinker Nietzsche pronounced the Lord dead. And now a century on, it is all too obvious that man has inherited the Lord's capacity to give and take. However, all too few men have the courage, or sufficient sense of reality to acknowledge the necessity of formulating principles in relation to giving and taking. Such endeavor is a moral imperative, being the responsibility that attaches to that inheritance. Peter Singer stands among the more courageous and moral. He, unlike most of us humble sinners, is prepared to emerge from the comfort zone provided by the myth that the Lord is still giving and taking.
