Washington, D.C. -- The Library of Congress last week announced ambitious plans to digitize several of its collections and make them accessible over computer networks.

Library officials said they hoped to have five million photographs, maps, pamphlets, speeches, and other items on line by 2000. The library houses 105 million items.
