Cancer Care Hits Top 15 Ranked Ohio State Specialties
It is the 15th consecutive year US News & Worls Report has named Ohio State's Medical Center one of "America's Best Hospitals." Only 173 of the almost 5,500 U.S. hospitals evaluated received scores high enough to be included in the rankings, which appear in the magazine's July 25, 2007 issue. In the US News & Worls Report rankings, Ohio State is recognized as a leader in cancer care, ear, nose & throat, gynecology, kidney disease, orthopedics, respiratory disorders and rehabilitation. Ohio State's James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute cracked the top 15, moving up six places from 21 and holding the top cancer ranking in Ohio. Rehabilitation retained a top 10 spot as well. "This significant increase in our cancer ranking is an indication of the quality of care we provide to our patients and the reputation we have earned among oncologists nationwide," said Dr. David Schuller, senior executive director of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Ohio State's lasting presence among the country's top hospitals in this annual survey has been complemented in the past year by recognition for the Medical Center's quality, safety and effectiveness in additional national health-care industry analyses, said Dr. Fred Sanfilippo, CEO of Ohio State's Medical Center and senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences at Ohio State. The Medical Center was ranked in the top five academic medical centers nationally in quality and accountability measurements in 2006 by the University HealthSystem Consortium and was listed among the safest and most effective medical centers in the country by the Leapfrog Group, a consortium of Fortune 500 companies that pay for the health care needs of millions of Americans. "It's clear that our consistent emphasis on quality, excellence and teamwork throughout the Medical Center is reflected in the national recognition we receive. But even more important, these characteristics are reflected throughout our organization in the daily delivery of personalized patient care, pursuit of new research discoveries, and the education of our students," Sanfilippo noted. "Strategic planning and growth combined with solid national rankings are important elements to continued success for any academic medical center striving to enhance its contributions to patients, students, faculty and staff, and the regional economy." The "America's Best Hospitals" issue, considered by many consumers and health-care industry analysts as a leading indicator of quality care and performance, is compiled using data collected annually from institutions of varying sizes around the country. Measurements include reputation based on national physician surveys, mortality data and a mix of other factors, such as patient volume, nursing care and technology, in compiling the final lists.
