Southern California HERC
University of San Diego

Founded in 1949, the University of San Diego has grown from a local college with 50 students and a handful of professors to a beautiful, nationally ranked Catholic university educating more than 7,500 students annually. Situated on a coastal mesa overlooking Mission Bay, the USD campus encompasses the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, Engineering Programs, the School of Law, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.

The breadth of programs available to students ensures that they will find a course of studies that ignites their intellectual fire. Coursework both inside and outside of the classroom and across disciplines encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills. Professors at USD welcome the free exchange of complex ideas in an environment of tolerance and civility. In this environment, students begin a lifelong habit of appreciating and cultivating their individual gifts.

The university employs 750 full- and part-time faculty who are committed to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service. Employment at USD is more than a job, and in some ways more than a career. Faculty and staff, as well as students, are engaged in the community and throughout the world in academic and service missions that reflect values rooted in the social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

The University of San Diego is a vibrant place offering many opportunities for personal and professional growth, including professional development classes, opportunities to participate in a wide range of recreation programs and campus events, and programs to help employees balance work and family life.

The university understands that in order to fulfill its mission it requires a highly qualified, diverse faculty and staff. The university believes that each employee is a valuable asset. Therefore, USD maintains a comprehensive and competitive benefits program for its employees and their dependents in order to attract and retain motivated individuals who will carry out its mission. The university provides a benefits program that:

  • recognizes that benefits are an important component of total compensation
  • helps the university compete successfully for human resources
  • provides a "safety net" of basic benefits protection against the financial impact of catastrophic life events
  • provides individual choice and flexibility in managing health and welfare benefits, and recognizes the diverse needs of the employee population
  • is managed in a fiscally responsible manner, complies with state and federal regulations, and is administered efficiently and effectively
  • is communicated effectively to provide employees with a full understanding of the value of the benefits program
  • is dynamic and changes as necessary to meet the needs of the workforce and the university.

Along with traditional benefits such as health, dental and life insurance, medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts, and an employee assistance program, the university offers tuition remission benefits to full-time regular employees, free use of the Jenny Craig Fitness Center, free tickets to home sporting events, and tram service to the Old Town Transit Center.
