The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, established in 1961, encompasses a large area of San Diego County, stretching from the edge of the city of San Diego to Imperial County in the east and to the Mexican border in the south. The district operates Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College, which provide post-secondary instruction in an array of classes, programs and services.

The colleges offer associateās degrees in the arts and sciences, in addition to advanced and basic certificates of learning. Both colleges are fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. They are part of the California Community Colleges, the largest system of higher education in the world, providing educational, vocational, and transfer programs to more than 2.8 million students each year at 109 colleges in 72 districts. The district employs 313 full-time faculty members, approximately 830 part-time faculty, and 351 administrative and classified staff. The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District provides a comprehensive benefits program that includes medical care, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care, life and income protection insurance, and membership in STRS (State Teachersā Retirement System) or CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement Systems).

Grossmont College currently has an enrollment of 18,000 students, a figure that is expected to climb to 20,000 by 2015. The college sits atop a 135-acre mesa in northwest El Cajon, adjacent to the cities of Santee, La Mesa, and San Diego. It draws its population mostly from the East County, but its well-known health, arts, and technology programs are among those that also attract students from throughout the county and beyond.

The college offers more than 150 degree and certificate programs for everyone from the college first-timer just out of high school to the long-time employed returning to school to update work skills or explore new career opportunities.

Located in the heart of Rancho San Diego, the college has an enrollment of about 8,000 students. By 2015, that number is expected to reach 15,000 as programs and course sections are expanded, thanks to a bevy of new buildings added to the campus. A new science and technology center has set the college on a course to become a gateway to biological and health professions, offering the full gamut of preparatory classes for students entering these fields.

With 57 degree programs and 66 certificate programs, Cuyamaca College's commitment to industry has translated into partnerships such as the Automotive Technology Department's Ford ASSET program and the high-tech CISCO Academy.

After much data collection and research, in 2004 the college applied for and received a Title III grant, the largest grant in its history. The college has also been successful in obtaining a major National Science Foundation grant in the area of telecommunications technologies and a special Congressional award designed to support math, science, and engineering education, as well as technology development.
