Limitless Horizons
The students and faculty at San Francisco State University represent a range of ethnic groups, cultures, and life experiences. In fact, it's been said that when you walk across this campus, you experience the world.
Here, in the city where the United Nations was created, SF State has its own representatives from the farthest reaches of the globe. Today, with more than 2,000 international students representing 95 countries, the University is a world-class destination. The mix of perspectives, languages and cultures they bring to SF State leads to stimulating discussions in and out of class.
International students serve as diplomats in more ways than one, often inspiring their peers to pursue academic studies in other countries. SF State consistently ranks among the highest of the 23 campuses in the California State University system for students studying overseas. Each year an increasing number of SF State students explore different cultures and teach the world about the United States through these study-abroad experiences. Likewise, SF State's faculty, many of whom pursue research and teaching opportunities in other countries, further global understanding through international education and exchange.
SF State, a longtime leader in building bridges to other countries and cultures, was first in the nation to establish an International Relations Department and offer a bachelor's degeree in the field. Today, internationalization remains a key part of the curriculum across every discipline, a strategy that helps ensure graduates are fully prepared for careers in a rapidly shrinking global society.
The spirit of working together and collaborating with neighbors near and far can also been seen in our proud tradition of global volunteerism. SF State ranks 16th in the nation among all U.S. colleges and universities for the number of Peace Corps volunteers it has produced since the program was launched in 1961.
Whether in the mountains of Mongolia or inside an elementary school down the street, SF State leaders are proving there are endless possibilities for teaching, learning and improving the quality of life for others in an increasingly global society.
