Our faculty members take full advantage of the 34 top-notch research labs in the University’s Loyola Science Center, regularly involving students in ground-breaking research and experimentation. Since 2003, more than 700 students have completed original research with professors through the faculty/student research program.

Scranton is known for its accomplished faculty achieving excellence in research and scholarly work. What might not be well known is the growing number of new faculty who have chosen Scranton. Approximately one-third of Scranton's tenured or tenure-track faculty have been hired during a recent five-year period, including 82 new professors between 2005 and 2010. In addition, more than $23 million has been committed to scholarly development since 2003.

Scranton has a long tradition of academic excellence, with success across a range of student scholarship. Since 1972, 139 graduates – including three in 2012 – have earned Fulbrights or other prestigious international fellowships. For seven years the University has been named a “top producer” of Fulbright awards for American students. In the past decade, our students have also earned five Truman and 10 Goldwater scholarships.

Carrying on a tradition that spans over three decades, Scranton students from nearly every undergraduate degree 56 different program areas have studied abroad in 41 different countries since 2005. The most popular destinations are Italy, Mexico, England, Australia, Spain and Ireland.

Athletic Excellence

The University’s NCAA Division III inter­collegiate athletics program has produced 29 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1981. In addition, 15 graduates have earned NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships since 1974.

This is an active campus, open 24-7. People get involved, stay on the weekends and always have something to do. There are more than 80 active clubs and organizations, including the University Players and the University Bands, Choirs and String Ensemble open to all students.

Of Scranton’s 522 senior applicants to health professions schools over the last 13 years, an average of 78% were accepted to schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, podiatry and optometry. The University opened its new 200,000-square-foot Loyola Science Center, one of the most dynamic, innovative science buildings in the country, in fall 2011.

Students take sustainability into Scranton through a variety of activities, including Earth Week. Events range from e-cycling and a local street sweep to an Earth Day fair and lectures. In the classroom, sustainability is infused in courses throughout all disciplines, from theology and philosophy to business.

More than 2,850 students perform well over 170,000 service hours each year through local, national and international service programs including work in Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Jamaica and Mexico.

Ninety-four percent of the class of 2011 was employed, pursuing graduate or professional studies, or volunteering full time within six months of graduation.

In the past year, we conducted 21 retreats with 550 student participants at our Retreat Center at Chapman Lake. Students are actively engaged in planning and executing retreats, creating excellent opportunities for leadership development.
