Diversity at University of South Carolina

As a leading public research institution, the University of South Carolina is committed to educating our community to become productive, successful members of society. We embrace students, faculty, and staff from every walk of life and every corner of the globe.

Today's global culture calls for a diverse classroom. The composition of South Carolina's student body reflects the varied culture and makeup of our state. Carolina has the eighth-highest percentage of African-American student enrollment in the nation among flagship universities, according to research by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. Devoted to ensuring equal access to higher education, the University hosts a number of scholarship and fellowship programs aimed to support the recruitment of minority students to the university.

The Gamecock Guarantee scholarship program also ensures that academically qualified students from families in lower socio-economic strata are able to enroll at Carolina.

Hildy Teegen, dean of the Moore School of Business, has played a lead role in elevating the number of women enrolled in the business school. Undergraduate women majoring in business outnumbered men 1,799 to 1,403 last year, and female graduate students also boasted a higher enrollment than their male peers-250 to 146.

Through outreach initiatives and a firm commitment to diversity, the university is preparing a diverse student body to make a difference here in South Carolina, and around the globe.
