  • NSU's Top Research Officer Making New Discoveries

The quiet and unassuming gentlemen who prefers a business suit over a lab coat is now responsible for Nova Southeastern University's fast-growing research. He is Gary Margules, Sc.D, the brilliant research administrator formerly with the University of Miami, who played a vital role in boosting that institution's research to the national level. Now at NSU, Margules brings decades of research experience and a desire to lead the university on the road to research prominence in his new position as the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer.

  • Talking Across Cultural Lines

As one of approximately 800 African-American students attending Austin's University of Texas (UT) in 1975, Debra Nixon and other black students created their own community within the 39,000 student population. Nixon, now a Ph.D. and assistant professor and associate chairperson of the Department of Family Therapy in NSU's Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, confesses that she did not recognize how much of a cocoon she had created for herself.

  • Osteopathic Medicine on the Rise

For Roger Alvarez, the decision to study osteopathic medicine was based on a belief that he could make a difference in his patients' lives by using a holistic approach to treat them.

  • Mailman Segal Institute Expands Resources

Terry Crispino can still recall getting the devastating diagnosis that her 2-year-old daughter Carly had autism. It was a little more than eight years ago, when the disorder was not yet in the public spotlight and there simply wasn't that much information readily available to parents. Much of it came through word of mouth from other parents in the same position.

  • The Library of Tomorrow—Today

Libraries are central to learning, building communities, and promoting research and intellectual exploration. The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center of Nova Southeastern University has gained the reputation as a model of libraries of tomorrow.

  • Breaking the Barriers of Traditional Learning

When the Fischler School opened its doors more than 35 years ago, the barriers of traditional learning were shattered, causing a ripple effect that can be felt today. Most modern classrooms of the day relied entirely on-site instruction- blackboards, professors, desks, students, and long lectures. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) was new. NSU was novel. NSU and its Fischler School of Education changed the rules of how adult learners learn. Blackboards became WebCT; professors travelled to cluster sites; students learned on-line in the privacy of their homes; lectures became on-line courses with audio, video, discussion, and interaction. Nova and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services brought the concept of customer service and customer care to higher education.

  • Theory and Practice at Business School

It's a question that college students often hear as they near graduation: "What are you going to do when you get out into the real world?"

  • Transformational Change in Higher Education

NSU is one of the healthiest colleges you've probably never heard of. NSU has more than 28,000 students, is the sixth largest independent, not-for-profit university in America, and has net assets exceeding $383,000,000 including a nearly $50,000,000 endowment. There aren't many academic institutions with numbers like NSU's, and the university is continuously working to find and implement the most effective methods of improving itself, fulfilling the school's founding mission "to establish an academic institution that would break new ground in educational excellence," according to president of NSU, Ray Ferrero, Jr.
