Founded in 1839, Longwood University is one of Virginia's oldest public institutions of higher education. Though much has changed since its beginnings, Longwood remains true to the vision of its founders and provides a learning environment that is preparing the citizen leaders of tomorrow.

Longwood Program Tackles Diversity, Inspires Mentors
There are 93,000 public schoolteachers in Virginia; only 600 of them are African-American men. In 2007, Longwood University launched a program to address this issue, becoming the flagship institution for the Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program in Virginia.

An Honors College for "Citizen Scholars"
The Cormier Honors College for Citizen Scholars, named in honor of Longwood University President Patricia P. Cormier and her husband Dr. Raymond Cormier, meets the needs of academically gifted and talented students through a distinctive living-learning community that links intellectual growth with the practice of citizenship. The college develops citizen leaders committed to using their learning in service to their local, national, and global communities.

Advancing Undergraduate Research
Longwood students are conducting the kind of research that is usually found only at the graduate school level. It’s just one of the ways in which our students are gaining real-world “hands-on” experience. And it’s one of the main reasons why our graduates enjoy a 90 percent placement rate in graduate school or the job market

Calling All Nurses
The Virginia Board of Nursing approved a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Longwood University. Longwood will immediately begin recruiting students for classes that begin in fall 2009.

Sustainable Dining
The decision to go trayless has reduced food waste by nearly two-thirds at Longwood University, surpassing even the expectations of dining services officials. The initiative had also has conserved the water, chemicals and energy used to wash trays.
