A Transformative Year at Hofstra

If any one year can be said to be a transformative time in the life of a university, then the past 12 months have been such a year for Hofstra. Hofstra learned it would host the third and final 2008 presidential debate, announced plans for a new medical school, welcomed a first-year class with the best credentials ever, saw its endowment rise to record levels, and unveiled a series of new initiatives, academic institutes and degrees.

  • Presidential Debate/Educate '08

    Following the Commission on Presidential Debates' decision last fall to award the final 2008 presidential debate to Hofstra, President Stuart Rabinowitz announced plans for Educate '08, an unprecedented educational effort that engages not only students and faculty but also the public in a year-long series of conferences, events and lectures.

  • A New Medical School

    Hofstra University has partnered with one of the nation's largest hospital systems to establish a new medical school on the Hofstra campus in Hempstead, New York. The new medical school plans to offer an MD degree program beginning in fall 2011, subject to receiving preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education and state approval.

  • Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize

    His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was selected as the first recipient of Hofstra's international Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize. The $50,000 prize will be presented to His Holiness on November 18, 2008 in India by a delegation including Hofstra officials, the family of Sardar Ishar Singh Bindra, which established the prize at Hofstra, and former Indian Prime Minister I.K. Gujral, a member of the Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize Honorary Committee. The Dalai Lama has agreed to visit Hofstra in the near future.  

  • Center for Civic Engagement

    Believing that informed and involved students are more likely to participate in the democratic process, Hofstra University established The Center for Civic Engagement to encourage students to become knowledgeable and active citizens in their campus, local, national and global communities.

  • National Center for Suburban Studies

    Hofstra rededicated its newly expanded National Center for Suburban Studies (NCSS) last fall to coincide with the 60th anniversary of nearby Levittown, the nation's first suburb, and the appointment of a new executive director and academic director.

  • Day MBA

    At Hofstra's Zarb School of Business, the full-time MBA experience prepares the highly motivated candidate for today's challenging global marketplace, making use of state-of-the-art technologies used in today's most advanced companies.

  • NewsHub

    Hofstra's School of Communication recently dedicated NewsHub, a cutting edge converged newsroom and multimedia classroom. NewsHub adds to the school's already existent media convergence tools, which fully acknowledge the importance of convergence in creating opportunities for students and their future careers.

  • Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room

    The Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room gives Hofstra faculty and students the ability to access and analyze a vast array of financial and economic data, apply analytical methods, conduct interactive trading simulations, and develop contemporary financial models.

  • Documenting Diversity

    Metropolitan area high school students are challenged to document a culture other than their own as part of an innovative summer program at Hofstra funded with a grant from the Phil and Monica Rosenthal Foundation.
