Washington Post Co. Buys Online College Matchmaking Service

October 12, 2007, 1:26 pm

The Washington Post Co. has expanded its education business by purchasing CourseAdvisor Inc. for an undisclosed price, according to the Washington Business Journal. CourseAdvisor is an online search-engine company that matches users’ interests and skills with college programs, both online and in class. It’s the latest addition to the Washington Post Company, which, in addition to its media holdings, owns Kaplan Inc., a company that provides test-preparation materials and runs an online institution.

The online college matchmaking business might be growing. Facebook, the Internet social-networking service, announced the release of SkoolPool, an online tool that helps users share information about colleges they are considering attending. SkoolPool was developed by a higher-education marketing company called the Academica Group to help Facebook users compare notes about the colleges they are considering before enrolling. —Dan Carnevale
