Computer scientists say a newly discovered flaw in Diebold’s touch-screen machines could be the most serious security threat ever identified in an e-voting system.
The vulnerability, discovered by a Finnish researcher, might allow anyone with computer-coding skills to tamper with the software on a particular voting machine and, conceivably, to spread viruses or malicious code to other machines. Diebold officials have described the flaw as a "theoretical security vulnerability," but professors at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Iowa say that, with primary elections coming up, it’s a far more serious matter.
