Officials at California State University at Fresno have approved a new policy that would let campus police put video cameras in teaching and research labs, but not in classrooms, "under limited circumstance and with faculty oversight," according to the Associated Press. The university's president, John D. Welty, will decide whether the policy will be enacted.
The policy represents a compromise between Fresno State police, who wanted to be able to conduct extensive undercover surveillance on the campus, and professors, who felt that excessive videotaping would threaten their academic freedom. Under the plan, police will be allowed to enter classrooms undercover during investigations, but they will not be permitted to put recording equipment in classrooms or faculty offices. –Brock Read
