U. of Northern Iowa Uncovers a Hacker’s Stash

January 4, 2007, 3:58 pm

How long does it take a college to discover that a hacker has started storing music files on one of its servers? As long it takes that hacker to build up a nice collection of tunes, evidently.

One such hacker broke into the University of Northern Iowa’s system in November and promptly started stashing digital music in a hidden folder. But campus officials discovered the security breach in late December, when the pirated music library reached a “noticeable size,” according to the Des Moines Register.

The corrupted server contained the names, addresses, and phone numbers of students, faculty members, and other employees who have used university’s Wellness/Recreation Center. But the potential data leakage caused by the attack appears to be limited, since Northern Iowa identifies students with randomly generated ID codes, not Social Security numbers. —Brock Read
