Tracing the Hope Diamond’s Black-Market Past

The crowning jewel of the Smithsonian Institution’s gem collection was once part of the crown jewels of France, according to a group of researchers. The team used computer modeling software to show that the Hope Diamond was cut from the "French Blue," a 69-carat stone that was bought by King Louis XIV, stolen during the French Revolution, and sold in its present form two decades later.
