File sharing is reverting to snail mail. With the recording industry cracking down on college students and other people sharing songs illegally online, a company called La La Media Inc. has found a seemingly legal way to help music lovers trade their CD’s. People go to La La’s Web site to see who has what CD’s. When they find what they want, they contact the owner and ask that it be sent via the old-fashioned postal service.
Users pay La La $1 for every transaction plus 49 cents for postage. The practice seems to be legal — the law allows purchasers of CD’s to share them at will. Of course, most people have digital copies of the songs on their computers, and keeping those would be illegal after sharing the CD. La La, which asks users to delete the copies before sending the CD’s, relies on the honor system in that regard. (The Boston Globe)
