More than 4,300 students and employees at Virginia Tech have signed up for the university's new emergency alert system since enrollment began on July 2, according to the Associated Press.
The university was the site of mass shootings on April 16, during which a gunman killed 32 people and himself.
At the end of June, the university signed up 3n, a mass-message-delivery company, to provide "VT Alerts." The three-tiered system will send text messages to cellphones; instant messages to users of IM on America Online, Yahoo, and MSN; and automated phone calls and e-mail messages to numbers and mailboxes.
The system also allows subscribers to specify contacts (such as parents or spouses) to be alerted during an emergency. –Josh Fischman
