The Blogs That Galvanized Gallaudet Protests

When Gallaudet University’s Board of Trustees voted on Sunday to revoke the controversial appointment of Jane K. Fernandes, the institution’s president-designate, Ricky D. Taylor rushed to his blog. And thousands of Gallaudet students and alumni who opposed Ms. Fernandes’s appointment followed suit.

Blogging, text messaging, and instant messaging have been enthusiastically adopted by many deaf students, who started using the technologies before they became ubiquitous elsewhere. And as the dispute over Ms. Fernandes’s appointment heated up, blogs like Mr. Taylor’s became indispensable news sources for students, graduates, and even professors.
