The State University of New York has managed to electronically link all the libraries in the university system, allowing students on 64 campuses access to books and online journals. The online library service, unveiled today, is called SUNYConnect. With it, students will be able to browse materials online and request that any of the 18 million books in the system’s libraries be delivered, within 48 to 72 hours, to their campuses.
Although other university systems have created similar online library resources, the sheer size of the undertaking made it a major accomplishment, says Peter D. Salins, provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs of the SUNY system. "It is undoubtedly the largest enterprise of this kind," he said. "It is more seamless and more comprehensive than most of our competitors." –Dan Carnevale
